One day Faculty Development Programme for all faculty of GRIET was held in the college seminar hall on 21/6/2011. Prof.P.S.Raju, Director has explained the useful tips for all faculties for increasing the levels of teaching and learning process, by practical demonstration of engineering models in the class. He has shown some models for demonstration and clearly explained their utility in enhanced learning. Prof.Jandhyala N.Murthy, Principal has explained the achievements of the college. He has emphasized the need for GOAL CLARITY and ROLE CLARITY for all to have high level of commitment. Dr.Mohd.Hussain, Professor of Civil Engineering has explained about the role of mind mapping ,as invented by Dr.Tony Buzan ,in Engineering Education. He has described the methodology to evolve 4M Mind mapping notes from the linear notes , for easy and quick review and recall ; as every student is required to write the University examinations in three hours in every subject after the completion of syllabus in more than sixty hours in every semester .4M stands for MULTICOLOURED, MAIN KEY WORDS REPRESENTING , MEANINGFUL IMAGE MAKING AND MNEMONIC .
Mind mapping techniques are internationally popular. Mind mappings are now being used by Multinational Companies for project management, Problem solving, daily planning etc. and Universities for academic purposes. There are software’s like Mind genius, Free mind etc. available to develop the mind maps.
An example to develop mind mapping notes from the linear notes is shown in the attachments.
The linear note for ill-effects of deforestation is given and the mind map for the same is developed.
The blank mind map can be downloaded from the website of GRIET by both students and faculty.
Using colour pencils and relevant images by hand ,one can stretch one’s own creative imagination, thereby the holistic right brain is linked to the analytic left brain for quick overall grasp and understanding of the subject.
There is usually left brain dominance over right brain, in engineers, (according to a study published in Readers Digest)by which they give importance only to logic and analysis. The three dimensional spatial awareness and spatial reasoning of observing right brain can also be developed with mind maps. We can not forget Dr.Albert Einstein ‘s saying that, ‘’Imagination is more important than knowledge’’.
